Cape Town – Samoa have stunned the Blitzboks in their final Pool D encounter at the London Sevens, beating their more fancied opponents 21-12

Samoa were off to the best start possible with two converted scores in the first two minutes of the match thanks to Alamanda Motuga and Joe Perez for a 14-0 lead.

The Blitzboks struck back in the 5th minute with an unconverted try from Heino Bezuidenhout to make the score 14-5 before Motuga scored his second just before half-time to give Samoa a 21-5 lead at the break.

The Blitzboks needed to score first in the second half and Seabelo Senatla duly obliged with a brilliant long range effort which was converted by Justin Geduld to leave the score at 21-12.

But with just two minute left in the match, Samoa easily held on for a massive victory meaning the Blitzboks will face either Fiji or New Zealand in the quarter-finals.

Earlier, South Africa easily beat Russia 31-0 and Canada 17-7 in early pool matches.

The South Africans trail Fiji by four points and need to overhaul the high-flying South Sea side to maintain their status as the top side in the world.

The knockout rounds will be played on Sunday.
